Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
