"Our team contained an abundance of unbelievable talents," says ex-City colleague Ben Knight. "Having such a high number of world-class players, you just feel like you're never going to lose."

These five players share a crucial commonality: their pathway to the City first team was eventually blocked. This situation underscores a deliberate aspect of the club's financial strategy—producing and transferring academy graduates for substantial profit. The sale of Cole Palmer to Chelsea by itself reportedly generated approximately £40 million for the champions.

For players like Cole Palmer, the move to Chelsea offered a new type of platform. "Having the City education and then putting your own spin on it and being able to play with freedom has definitely helped Cole," added Knight. "He was the type of player that required a bit of freedom to be at his most effective... At Chelsea as the focal point; he can go where he wants and get on the ball and do what he wants. The move has worked out."

The main goal at Manchester City's academy is clear: to develop players for the club's elite team. To facilitate this, a specific playing framework is used, echoing the philosophy of Pep Guardiola's team to ensure a smooth transition. This emphasis on possession and match dominance also aligns with the Chelsea current approach, making graduates of this high-quality footballing education particularly attractive prospects.

The development process frequently includes emulation of the established stars. "I would try to copy Bernardo Silva, McAtee would try to copy David Silva," Knight said. "The greatest challenge is they're multi-million pound players and you're trying to take their position—which is incredibly difficult. It is next to impossible."

His personal path nearly concluded early at City, with some at the club doubting whether the small 16-year-old possessed the necessary attributes. "He experienced like a significant growth spurt," Knight noted. "Subsequently the pandemic occurred and he trained with the first team and it was a case of: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's absolutely ridiculous.'"

Graduating as a City academy product holds a certain cachet, and the standard of player produced is repeatedly impressive. Astute recruitment and excellent coaching ensure to keep City ahead and render them the envy of rivals. Their willingness to spend in youthful talent, as seen with Lavia, Delap and Gittens, grants a distinct edge.

All of these players had the valuable opportunity to be coached by Pep Guardiola and understand directly what is required to excel at the highest level.
