Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and the law triumphed.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated instigator – who has been under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid increasing rumors that he will be moved to a well-known top-security facility.

Past Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited minimal compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

“What’s the need to give these dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up there, all you have to do is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an seeming effort to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he expected the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the result of a near-fatal knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding 40 detainees: “It's practically one square meter per prisoner.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure speaking out prior to the ex-leader's expected detention.

Penning in a leading daily, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to see “the greatest wrong in its history”.

“This is an injustice that eats away the spirits of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Opinion

This could be true considering the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his expected jailing has also pleased the feelings of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for plotting to block the elected leader from becoming president – and also plotting to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's allied group, said: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive respectful treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the harsh conditions of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to inspect a prison to learn what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.

Likely Prison Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his probable destination seems to be a close prison for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro had while living in the spectacular leader's home, approximately a short distance away.

As per sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be authorized to have a TV and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Ideological Reactions

He criticized the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
