Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested
Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.
Last Thursday Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".
The White House did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.
Earlier Events
Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Various sources indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.
Nevertheless, on Monday Trump supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the war on the existing battle lines.
"Freeze the lines where it stands," he remarked.
Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.
Political Perspectives
The "root causes" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.
Zelensky stated discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.
He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
