New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
