New Year's Revelers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are due to be low, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this signified the weather could to cause major effects across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
