Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
