Cameroon's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has declared that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations that he provoked "aggressive election protests".

A minimum of four demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between security forces and demonstrators since the presidential election on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader asserts that he was the true winner, a claim rejected by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have alarmed the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for caution.

Minister's Accusations

On Tuesday, Nji charged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he described as "illegal" rallies leading to the deaths, and also criticised him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates involved in an rebellious scheme" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who took control in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the October 12 vote with over half of the votes, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

The opposition figure is has not yet commented to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had previously stated that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen shot on protesters present near his home in the city of Garoua, killing at least two civilians.

Inquiry Revealed

Recently, the government official announced that an inquiry would be initiated into unrest surrounding the announcement of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he said, without offering a specific number of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji added that a number of members of the law enforcement also sustained significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji insisted the situation across the country was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in certain regions of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators established obstructions on that day, and set fire to rubber on the thoroughfares.

Analysts caution that the election-related unrest could plunge the nation into a governmental instability.
